Questions on upgrading a Dell Vostro 230 gaming computer builder

I recently purchased a used Dell Vostro 230 with a Core 2 Duo E7500 @ 2.93ghz, 4gb ddr3, and Windows 10 pro 64 bit. I was wondering if it is better to have 4gb ddr3 or 8gb ddr2 as the mobo cannot support 8gb of ddr3 but can support 8gb ddr2. Furthermore, I want to know if the Core 2 Quad Q9400 is compatible with the mobo in the system. I know it is the same socket type, but I don't know if the mobo supports quad core cpus. The mobo model is the Dell 07N90W. Thanks!
