Sound popping through headphones- New Laptop- Help please :) gaming computer builder

I'm a university student and in prep for my exams coming up soon I've just bought a new laptop. It seems that every now and then with headphones connected I'm getting a popping noise and/or a crackling noise. This occurs when I connect via the 3.5mm jack or by a USB to 3.5mm converter. Whilst I'm still in the returns period for amazon right now I can't afford to do it because of the exams. Any help would be appreciated.
