Simple software or computer design? gaming computer builder

I tried posting this to the parenting forum, but received some less than favorable replies so I thought I'd try here instead. My 9 year old son loves computers. He mostly just plays games, but he's interested in designing his own app or game. Are there kid friendly sites or software that teach kids how to do this? We've tried one (can't remember the name right now) that teaches simple computer engineering, but they're TOO simple and he finds them boring. Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated. He does do other things, too, but his true love is anythingto do with computers. Thanks in advance.
