Building a server from old computer. gaming computer builder

So I have a pc that I wiped windows off and installed Ubuntu 16.04 . I am wanting to set it up as a personal server. I have some questions that are probably dumb, but if the server is gonna be Linux based can I access it with a Windows or Mac pc? Or only linux. And also I am looking for some steps or tutorial as how to set it up as a server. I am very new to Linux and still getting my bearings.
