Not sure why my laptop isn't running games well gaming computer builder

The specs of my laptop are: intel core i7 6500U CPU 2.5GHz 16gb of ram OS windows 10 home Nvidia geforce 940M

For most games I need to put all settings to the lowest quality and I'm not sure why. Any help understanding my problem would be appreciated
