Let's all discuss our predictions for what computer technology will be like in 5 years. It doesn't have to be too detailed, but stay on topic. Say anything from which companies will be on top to what specs will be considered good or anything at all. Years from now it'll be cool to look at what we thought and see how close our predictions got. Don't add in any frivolous stuff like Computers will be different please.
Here are my predictions: 1. RAM: 16GB will be the norm, and 8 GB will seem low the way 4GB does now. 24 and 32 GB will be used in high end rigs. DDR5 will be the standard and be even faster than DDR4. 2. Displays: IPS will become like TN, and will be the cheaper option. AMOLED displays will become the IPS of the era, but it will still be a transition period. QHD will become the normal resolution, a step up from 1080p. 4K will become increasingly common and cheaper. 5K, 6K, and 8K will be very high end options the way 4K is now. 3. Manufacturing Process size: By this time, Intel will be nearing the end of 10nm, and the first generation of 7nm process size will have come out or will be coming out soon. 5nm will have been developed but will be too unstable for chips at the time. 4. PCI Express will be in its 4th version, and all motherboards will support it. SATA interfaces will be dying out completely. 5. Storage: Hard drives will be very low end or will be used only for data sizes in excess of 10 TB. SSDs will be medium end, and it will be normal for laptops to ship with a 1 TB SSD. Intel Optane and optane like solutions will be commonplace, and will serve as second level RAM as well as speedy storage. It will be normal to have a 128 Optane like boot drive, 64 to 16 GB of which would be used as second level RAM - Used in cases where you want to turn off your computer but keep all applications open, or when you need more RAM. Just like 1 TB seems sufficient now, 3 TB will seem sufficient in the same manner. 1-1.5TB will be medium, and 512GB won't seem like enough for much and will be the bare minimum of storage. 6. GPUs- 2.5 GHZ clock speeds will be normal, and low end ones will 2 to 3x as powerful as what we consider high end today (1080). 7. CPUs - Dual core processors will be replaced with quad core, quad core with 6 cores, and for very high end laptops and desktops, 8 cores. Clocks as high as 5.0 GHZ base will be considered commonplace.
That's all I have to say for now. What are your predictions?
