Can my files be recovered? gaming computer builder

Sad sad day. My old iMac I bought back in 8th grade finally gave out. I'm going into my Junior year of college so I definitely got my ~$1800 out of it. It is a 2011 iMac 27" base model, 1TB HDD.

I stopped using this computer years ago, backed up some videos but never got around to anything else (nothing is really too important on it anyways).

Anyways, it has been on the lock screen where I can select users. When I use it, the HDD makes a terrible clicking noise. It showed all the users still there, I clicked on it to enter the password and I think I got it wrong, and it just got stuck loading there. So I reset the computer and it won't boot at all, just gives a folder with a question mark.

My HDD is toast. I plan on throwing a SSD in there just to have around, and when I take the hard drive out, can the files be recovered somehow? I know nothing about it, but if I were to take the hard drive somewhere is there anything that can be done?

Sorry if I'm all over the place, typing this quick before I go to bed and I'm not too good with this stuff to begin with. Thanks.
