I have a laptop that is almost 6 years old (purchased August 2011) (Windows 7). It still runs fast because I installed a 128 GB Crucial m4 SSD in early 2013 to replace HDD. I also upgraded RAM 4 to 8 GB at the end of 2013. The SSD is out of warranty now and it's also about 70% full.
I want to get a 256 or even 512 GB SSD to replace the 128. I can afford either. The laptop doesn't have a second bay. 512 will fit all the data I want to store if it's 60% full (I have a lot on an external HDD right now) but the 256 won't.
But is it worth it, since my laptop is relatively old and I would have to purchase a new laptop within 2-3 years at most anyway?
Since most laptops aren't user serviceable anymore I wouldn't be able to put the 512 GB SSD in my new laptop. Edit: This is really the biggest problem - if I buy the 512 now, I want to be able to use it going forward but I am not sure I would be able to install it in a new laptop.
Thanks.
