Help appreciated. gaming computer builder

I am in need of a little bit of assitance. My friend built me my pc three years ago. He and his gf came over and helped me get it all set up, but I was told strictly never to touch anything inside and to call him should anything go wrong. Problem is I moved a year ago and now I am having problems with my PC.

Yesterday I came home from my gravyard shift to find my PC was off. I'd left my place in a hurry last night and was sure I'd left it running in my haste. I tried turning it on, without success so I took the plug from my surge protector and plugged it directly into the wall. It turned on without a problem but within five minutes of the computer running while I made tea, the tower began to emit a chemical/burnt smell and then restarted. I shut the computer down then and took off the side panel. The smell seems to be coming from the bit with "Intel" inscribed on it. I haven't turned it on since for fear of frying more parts, something google assured me could happen.

My question though is less about what happened to my computer and more about though where I could find a book or a site to teach me how to fix my computer myself. I do not know the names of any of these parts aside from brand names I can see, which is aggravating. Almost all my hobbies require use of this machine and it has connected me with all the best people in my life. I'd like to learn to give it the care it needs.

PS Sorry if this is the wrong subreddit; I did not really know where to begin but /r/computers seemed a likely bet.
