Advice needed! Do I need virtualbox to run OSx on windows? Or can I boot it from an external hard drive from the biosx gaming computer builder

I want to dabble in ios game and app creation and not sure if i should figure out virtualbox or if I should try and set up OSx on a separate hard drive and just boot it from there. Thoughts?

Edit: I know nothing about virtualbox so forgive me if i need a mac or something to even be able to run it. I just know virtualbox or an external hard drive are my only two options as far as I know and need help deciding which to learn how to set up.
