USB port failing gaming computer builder

My USB port connected to my external hard drive keeps failing, I've tried googling all of the tricks to either discovering the hard drive or fixing the USB port but the only solution has been restarting my computer until the device connects. Even then the port disconnects within about 1-5 minutes or when I try to boot up a steam game
