Need some help with understanding Remote Desktop gaming computer builder

Ok firstly I understand what its purpose is, I have Windows Server 2008 R2 and enabled Remote Access, I went to my Windows 10 machine and types in the servers IP address but it wont connect for one of theses reasons:

  1. Remote access to the server is not enabled (well I enabled it and it says its enabled)

2.The remote computer is off (Its turned on as I'm looking at it)

3.The remote computer is not available on the network

Now I've ruled it down to number 3. the thing is I'm new to this, infact I'm trying to learn more about servers and I'm up to this point. My setup is two VMs one with Windows 10 on and one with Sever 2008 R2. I'm not not sure how this is meant to work as I guess my Windows 10 machine isn't on the same network as my Server I'm assuming this is the issue? but from my understanding you should be able to access a remote machine in this way so I'd assume that they wouldn't need to be on the same network as if I had one machine in an office and I was accessing it remotely from my house on my laptop the networks would be different, however I can see why it's not working as the server has a private IP address assigned so it would make sense that my Windows 10 client wouldn't connect to it! if someone could point me in the right direction and help me understand I'd really appreciate it. Again I'm just trying to learn I'm no expert.
