Mediacom internet help gaming computer builder

Not sure this is the correct subreddit so please direct me to the right one if this isn't it.

I have Mediacom (I know, I know...only option in my area) and I am currently renting/using the wireless router they provide.

Will switching to my own router make a drastic difference to my speed? Range? I just want to know if buying my own router is ultimately worth it. We generally run two phones an Xbox one (so Netflix and such), and some light pc gaming on their 100 ultra service.

Also, if getting my own router is the best option, which router/modem combo is the best bet? Would like to keep it under $200-$250 if possible.
