Are GPU's compatible with any motherboard? gaming computer builder

I have a MSI Mobo and a AMD 4.0 GHz 8 core cpu and want to replace my AMD Radeon R9 270x sapphire toxic which is pretty outdated. And I want to replace it with a Nvidia GTX 1060. Just want to be safe if GPU's are compatible with any Mobo.
