Pc building help (windows on old hardrive) gaming computer builder

Hi I'm going to build a pc, but really dislike the idea of spending £90 on Windows would it be possible if I could get the hard drive off my old computer and put it as my main hard drive in the new one? If it is possible when it boots up would it automatically boot up the bios or will it boot windows like nothing happened? My old hardrive from my old pc had windows on it. If it does boot the bios how will I activate windows which would have been on the hardrive
