Network question - can you put two computers from different location in a same 'virtual' network? gaming computer builder

As title says, I have zero knowledge of computers. It might be a very stupid question, but wanted to ask you guys this question:

Can i connect two computers from different location (mine + a friend's house) in the same network somehow?

The reason being: I enjoyed playing Diablo 2, almost 20 years ago, wanted to play it again, but the Battlenet on D2 is really buggy. There was a mode that I can play with someone using a different computer by entering the IP address of the other computer, but that being said, the two needs to be on the same network.

Is there any way I can get through that? Or is it only a possible mode when I have the friend over?
