Upgrading an old HP desktop gaming computer builder

My parents ancient desktop PC is more than showing its age.
Its a HP with an Athlon 64 x2 6400+ with 3GB DDR2 running (against my better judgement) Windows 10. Used for web browsing, Office, that kind thing.

I know that realistically a new system would be better but I'm not mentally prepared for the faff that having to back up all their junk would cause. As such, I'm looking at upgrade options. Would they see much benefit from replacing the stock CPU with an eBay special Phenom X4 9600 & 8GB RAM? According to the HP website this is as far as I can go with the original MB in place.

They're pretty technophobic so I don't want to do anything out of the ordinary like pop Linux on there.

Cheers!
