Question about SSD and motherboard. gaming computer builder

My pc needs - Casual gamer, looking for a long - lasting pc, will not be overclocking.

A person told me that I will not need asrock z270 as it is an overkill since I will not be overclocking and recommended b250m-hdv. What are your thoughts?

Regardings SSD, what is it exactly, from what I can understand it is like a small hard drive that you use for stuff you want to work faster/more optimal? So I should place games/programmes on it?
