Question about how dual monitor displays with separate graphics cards work gaming computer builder

So, this is mainly a curiosity thing... Say I using a desktop computer I build with two graphics cards: a GeForce GTX 1080 Ti and a GeForce GTX 950. I have each hooked up to its own separate display, with the overall display being extended. And dxdiag says that is working as expected, each card being dedicated to its own monitor. My question, though: Do programs automatically start being rendered by the card once they are on that display? For example, if I took my Chrome browser from one display and dragged it into the second, would the other card immediately take over the render? And then what happens if there is an application open in the middle of the extended display? Does each card render its own graphical half of the program? Seems a little too complex to work.... Anyway, please help satiate a fellow redditor's curiosity! Thanks peeps!!
