Message keeps popping up that my external hard drive needs to be formated, but I've been using it for years with no issue. I don't want to lose all my data. gaming computer builder

Like the title says when I plug in my external HD it says it needs to be formated, but if I do that I will lose all my data on it. Last time I used it I was traveling and plugged it into a tv in a hotel to watch some stuff from it.

This is the first time I've tried using it in my regular computer scince I've been back. I've tried both usb ports, restarting the computer, and tried different computers but still keep getting the same message. Any advice?
