Laptop not recognising external hard disk gaming computer builder

So I have been successfully using a Asus Eeebook laptop for the past 2 years. Recently I noticed that the laptop was having trouble recognising my Seagate external hard disk.This happened maybe twice,there was 2-3 minute delay in recognising it. Today,Morning I plugged my phone through a data cable to the laptop and transferred some images in my phone.It worked fine at that time,I pulled out the cable from the port without safely removing it. Now when I am connecting my external hard disk,it is not being shown.I tried connecting my phone,pendrive but no drive is being shown. Im running Win 8.1. Please guys tell me how to solve this dilemma?
