Does a bridged modem restrict router speeds? gaming computer builder

I recently bought a TP-LINK Archer C2 router, it does not have a built in modem. So i will have to buy a modem and im just wondering if i will have to spend a great amount on a modem that will support the routers capabilities? Will the router only perform as well as the modem can? im not too sure how it all works, any help would be appreciated thanks
