My hard drive had a stroke? gaming computer builder

So after I was getting ready to go somewhere I put my computer to sleep like I always do but this time, it got blue screen of death, I thought it was weird but had to go and just left it. When I got back and turned it on a lot of stuff was missing. All my browser extensions, half of the programs i had installed, and all my pictures. I initially thought it for some reason was set back to a previous back up but thought it wasn't possible since things like skype and adblock which I had since the beginning were gone. What happened? did my hard drive have a stroke? edit: bookmarks as well, the list goes on
