HELP- Double monitor question gaming computer builder

I have a question about whether or not a 2 monitor setup would work for me. Right not I have 1 monitor connected to my laptop through the HDMI port on my laptop and the laptop image is mirrored onto this monitor. My laptop only has one HDMI connection but it also has a mini display port as another external connection option. I want to connect a second monitor through the mini display port but have it extend the display instead of mirror the laptop screen. So my goal is to have the first monitor mirror the laptop screen and the second one be an extension of the laptop and have it display separate items if I drag them over. My question is if I were to connect a second monitor through the mini display port, would this work and extend the display or would it just show the same thing as the first monitor and laptop screen?
