Replacing a hard drive gaming computer builder

A month ago my hard drive broke and my laptop doesn't recognize it. I'm trying to save money by replacing it myself. I've opened up my laptop and unplugged the old hard drive. If I buy the same hard drive will I be able to plug it in and my laptop will work? Obviously there won't be an OS on it so il have to buy windows 10 again but in theory this would work right? Would this be a smart thing to do or would I save time and money by taking it to a professional?
