Macbook-Windows-Linux Server gaming computer builder

Hi /r/computers,

I'm wondering if it is possible to set up an ubuntu or similar server to act as a centralized file hub in my home.

I'm not sure exactly what you would call this. Basically, I'm looking to build a quiet and low power drain linux box, that will always be on.

It's purpose will be to store files, videos, important documents that I send to it from a mac and a windows pc. Not sure what the compatibility issues would be here. From there I would have two hard-drives attached that would create a daily backup on each drive automatically. The files must be able to be accessed by both the windows pc and mac. If say for instance I have a document I need to print, edit, or open.

Any recommendations on how to proceed or potentially simpler alternatives?
